Description

This course will address two areas that have been traditionally underexplored in epistemology. First, while epistemological inquiry has long focused on the nature of knowledge, comparatively little systematic attention has been devoted to the nature of ignorance. Second, although the field has thoroughly examined the epistemic states of individuals, it has largely overlooked the epistemic dimensions of groups. Consequently, this course will engage with recent work on (1) the epistemology of ignorance and (2) the epistemology of groups.

Methodology

This course is designed to help you develop three essential skills for a successful academic career in philosophy: reading, discussing, and writing philosophical texts. Classes will be primarily discussion-based. The first session will introduce the course topics along with some foundational concepts in epistemology. Subsequent sessions will follow a seminar format, requiring you to complete the assigned readings in advance and come prepared to engage actively in discussions.
In parallel, and ideally starting as early as possible, you will be expected to write a research paper on one of the course topics.

Evaluation

Research paper (3,000–5,000 words): 70%

Other activities: 30%
